Supporting Staff Wellbeing in Powell River

In this report, Charlie Naylor shares information about a 2-year project to initiate support for the wellbeing of all staff in School District 47, Powell River. A small team worked on this project during the 2017/2018 and the 2018/19 school years, alongside their health authority. Many people, including district staff in many different roles, school and district leaders and union representatives, contributed their time and knowledge to consider how to address staff wellbeing.

From the start, there was an emerging understanding that the primary goal was to build a foundation on which wellness approaches could be created and sustained over the long term.

While the many consultations held over the 2 years may have slowed the impetus for action, the time spent led to increased dialogue and an understanding that the approaches adopted must be relevant to the context and culture of the school district.
